Researchers report unprecedented growth of black lion tamarin cubs

For the first time in history, researchers from the Institute of Ecological Research (IPÊ) were able to record and monitor the growth of a black lion tamarin cub in its natural habitat. The unprecedented monitoring ranges from birth to the first months of the animal's life, in a rare record of one of the most endangered species in Brazil (see images below). The images are part of an international study and were captured using 27 camera traps installed in tree trunks, at heights up to eight meters from the ground. According to Gabriela Rezende, coordinator of the Black Lion Tamarin Conservation Program, the technology allows non-invasive monitoring, operating 24 hours a day without interfering with the forest's routine or causing stress to the animals.
